It is with deep sorrow that we share news of the sudden loss of Renuka Pillay. Renuka was a dynamic education specialist and activist for social change in Africa. She was actively engaged in the fight against apartheid, and had a global reputation for her devotion to a forty-year career dedicated to increasing education opportunities for children, adolescents, and adults across Africa, India, the U.S., and the UK. Most recently, Renuka supported Uganda’s Ministry of Education on education policy, teacher development, and planning and monitoring pre-service and in-service training activities.
Together with her husband and soulmate, Dr. Pat Naidoo, Executive Director of ELMA East Africa, Renuka fought the apartheid system both at home in South Africa and while in exile abroad. Pat and Renuka built a life committed to service and improving the healthcare and education opportunities for countless underserved communities across the globe.
In addition to her beloved husband and children, Renuka leaves behind many devoted friends, extended family members, and colleagues.
A memorial is scheduled for Thursday March 21st, at the Office of the Prime Minister, Kampala, Uganda.
